SLP Tricks to Slow Your Rate of Speech

A pacing board is a tool used in speech therapy to help children or adults who have difficulty with their speech rate or fluency. It is typically a rectangular board with a series of coloured or numbered squares or images (e.g. stars) that are arranged in a row.

During therapy, the client places small objects (e.g., marbles, coins, or beads) on each square as they say a word, phrase, or sentence. The objects help them to visually monitor and regulate their speaking rate, by indicating when to pause or slow down their speech.

For example, if the client is working on reducing their rate of speech, they might be instructed to place a bead on each square as they say a sentence. This helps them to break the sentence down into smaller, manageable chunks, and to pace themselves as they speak.

Using a pacing board can also help clients to become more aware of their own speaking rate and fluency, which can be helpful in improving their overall communication skills.

Overall, pacing boards are a useful tool in speech therapy for clients who struggle with their speaking rate or fluency, and they can be a great way to help clients make progress towards their communication goals.
